      <image:title>Blog - The Elements of User Experience: Typography - Another major factor is the use of other elements like space and color to enhance an experience. Many apps have a dark mode of some variety nowadays and with that, they need to make sure every part of the app transitions so that’s all legible. All the type needs to go from black to white and maybe the grays, yellows, and greens that were potentially used will need a different shade. On the other hand, apps like your basic calendar one utilize their negative space very well. Each date is clearly separated, with a little space available for a dot on each day. Once you click on a day you’ll then see even more lines, again all a set distance apart to help show the idea of time moving. Overall, type may be the most important element of every user experience. Most website or app content contain heavy amounts of reading, with information all throughout the app. If any of this was not legible, the user would quickly leave the app, not wanting to waste time with something they can’t even understand. By having a stable and consistent type throughout, your user will gain a sense of comfort, knowing that each piece of text will remain consistent throughout the whole app.</image:title>

      <image:title>Blog - The Creative Benefits of Project Management - What I do know though from my past app making experiences is that wireframes can often be very dense and time consuming. That’s why for week 6, I left room open for the graphic and UI design section, as the prototypes are the only major work being created that week and are often just the wireframes with the design added, as well as some potential minor tweeks. I also kept week 7 open solely for revisions, giving me more extra time incase things don’t work out exactly as expected</image:title>

      <image:title>Blog - The Importance of a Project Proposal</image:title>
      <image:caption>In my proposal, I first began by researching the topic of keeping score at a baseball game, as to better understand the appeal it has to many, as well as the issues they face when doing so. This led me to many different types of sources, such as how many consider it an art form, why it doesn’t seem to be as popular nowadays, as well as how professional broadcasters go about keeping score. With these sources, I felt I had a much better handle on what the issue is surrounding keeping score and could thus describe both the problem itself as well as a logical solution to the problem in much greater detail.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - The Importance of a Project Proposal</image:title>
      <image:caption>Afterwards, I then laid out a detailed list of what artifacts the project will contain. I used my past app making experiences as a basis for much of these artifacts, making sure to include a detailed summary of each part I felt was important. This included simple user research and competitive analysis, as well as things like persona’s and empathy maps, which I put under a general “research phase”. I then laid out what I considered the “production phase”. This included artifacts such as information architecture, wire frames, and prototypes. I made sure to detail what exactly these artifacts would be used for as well. This allows a potential client to have a clear understanding of why these artifacts need to be made as well as give me help in the future if I ever need to look back and see why I choose what I chose.</image:caption>

      <image:title>About - About me</image:title>
      <image:caption>My name is Sean Keenan and I am a UX Designer who graduated from Quinnipiac University. At Quinnipiac, I was in the accelerated communications 3+1 program, obtaining an Bachelor’s in Graphic and Interactive Design and a Master’s in Interactive media. Throughout my experience, I’ve learned and utilized many different facets of design, including layout design using InDesign, coded websites using Sublime Text, and fully detailed wireframes using InVision. I’ve used these skills in a professional environment while at my internship with the Bucks County Courier Times. There, I helped design multiple ads for the Company’s original online shows, created weekly quizzes using information from that week set of papers, as well discuss and work collaboratively with a team of experienced designers. I look forward to the next opportunity I can get to another company that provides me with even more opportunities to use and improve my design skills. Get in touch: Resume</image:caption>

      <image:title>Portfolio - BacklogTrack - Competitive Analysis</image:title>
      <image:caption>To begin the process, I performed a competitive analysis. Specifically, I wanted to see what other backlog apps were available in the Apple App Store, as well as what users typically seemed to like and dislike for those applications. Through this analysis, I was able to find that most backlog apps were pretty lacking. All the user bases were quite small and all of the focus was on video games rather than all entertainment. This helped show me both what I need to do to make my app stand out, as well as what has worked the best for apps like these, such as a playlist feature.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6079d53091c1aa468fec326b/1619632107174-ZE53E6XBXIFYDIVJ432E/bt-empathy-map.png</image:loc>
      <image:title>Portfolio - BacklogTrack - User Interview and Empathy Map</image:title>
      <image:caption>With a better idea of the competition, I then moved on to user interviews. Due to time constraints, I was only able to perform one interview, though I still got some good information from it. My interviewee (Jim) helped show how managing a backlog is often more mental than logistical. He knows what’s on his backlog and what he usually likes to play, but the intimidation of the size and pressure he feels to shrink this backlog causes him to enjoy the games and movies less. With this in mind, I knew that I had to focus on features beyond just tracking the backlog, features that would incentivize people to play/watch and get the most enjoyment they can.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6079d53091c1aa468fec326b/1619632793491-C54DXB3942O76BKVHKTY/bt-persona.png</image:loc>
      <image:title>Portfolio - BacklogTrack - Personas</image:title>
      <image:caption>With a better understanding of what a potential user may want, I created user personas to get a clearer picture of what my audience would be. I tried to make the personas diverse, focusing on different age groups, as well as their main form of entertainment consumption. These helped show how an actual person may want to use this app. It’s one thing to say there needs to be a better way to keep a backlog, but writing out potential scenarios, with concepts such as how it affects your interaction with friends or alters a games enjoyment, makes it easier to ideate on more concrete features the app would contain.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6079d53091c1aa468fec326b/1619632939121-H1IWGEY77OOV78QKQTC0/Info-arch-2.png</image:loc>
      <image:title>Portfolio - BacklogTrack - Information Arch</image:title>
      <image:caption>Now with a clear audience, I began creating the information architecture. With my user research in mind, I choose screens such as a customizable archive and a schedule as the focus, since that was a common issue in both my competitive analysis and user interview. I also wanted to make sure the app flowed well, not having too many screens and allowing the user to find the game/movie they want efficiently. For the final product, much of the content will be taken up by all the different games and movies synched with the app that you can find.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6079d53091c1aa468fec326b/1619633295992-43PEZD2FRJNYTEQC5QAK/bt-wireframe-sample.png</image:loc>
      <image:title>Portfolio - BacklogTrack - Wireframes</image:title>
      <image:caption>With all the research done and a structure decided upon, I began creating wireframes for the app. To create these wireframes, I used the program InVision. When creating the wireframes, I knew I wanted the visual focus of the app to be the covers of all the different games and movies, with brief descriptions and what not only put in when necessary. This would make the app a lot easier to scroll through since there’s little reading, as well as inspiring people to play/watch certain games/movies due to an interesting cover.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6079d53091c1aa468fec326b/1619633480775-HQOWQ5872Z2IJQ1GN44H/bt-mockup.png</image:loc>
      <image:title>Portfolio - BacklogTrack - Mock Up</image:title>
      <image:caption>Now that the structure was decided, all that’s left was putting in the color and detail. Originally, I wanted the main color to be a sort of metallic blue, as I felt that would present a more “techy” feel. As I soon found though, the color was too dark, causing the covers to blend in the background rather than be the focus like they should be. Due to that, I ended up going with a lighter gray as the main color, as I felt it still provided a “techy” feel (think Apple silver) while being light enough to make the game covers stick out.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Portfolio - MindShift Redesign - Competitive Analysis</image:title>
      <image:caption>To begin the process, I performed a competitive analysis to see how MindShift compares to other stress relieving apps. Through this analysis, I found that there was a surprisingly large market for stress relief apps. Their user bases were much larger than MindShifts, some clocking in over 700k reviews. With this in mind, I knew I had to do something to make MindShift stand out, giving the user a reason to choose it over the alternatives.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6079d53091c1aa468fec326b/1619636279892-LCTRK4V3ORE2C3DRPQ6I/mindshift-empathy-map.png</image:loc>
      <image:title>Portfolio - MindShift Redesign - User Interview’s and Empathy Map</image:title>
      <image:caption>For user interviews, I performed two different interviews and ended up finding two entirely different user bases. For my first interview, my participant didn’t have anxiety problems himself, but knew people who did and wanted to know if there was any way to help. My other interviewee had anxiety issues, so I was able to see what they might want out of an app like this. These interviews helped show me the variety of users the app may have, as well as how I may have to accommodate for those different users.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6079d53091c1aa468fec326b/1619636326217-N1E90GKCGSG63S92J54M/mindshift-persona.png</image:loc>
      <image:title>Portfolio - MindShift Redesign - Persona</image:title>
      <image:caption>Knowing what potential audience I may have, I created a persona to better understand what they may need. My persona focused more on the second user interview, someone who has intense anxiety and wants help with it. I found the frustrations particularly helpful, as I found many people’s issues with anxiety stems largely from not knowing how to deal with it and who to open up about it to. By having a place to learn and vent, this app could help solve the needs of this potential user and many others.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6079d53091c1aa468fec326b/1619636471040-L1Y98L22CHFL7F4ZF3E9/keenan_IA.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Portfolio - MindShift Redesign - Information Arch</image:title>
      <image:caption>Knowing what my users will need, I began creating the structure of the app. One of the biggest issues I found with the original is the lack of clarity in the navigation. I and my user interviews found it difficult at times to find what they wanted. Knowing that, I tried to make the navigation fairly simplistic, having screens such as “Learn” be the same for each type of anxiety, making it easier for the user to grasp at a glance. Despite some of those issues though, I kept a lot of the core features such as goal setting and quick relief</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6079d53091c1aa468fec326b/1619636498789-RW654OSXS5N0S7FWDKC8/Wireframes-all-in-one.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Portfolio - MindShift Redesign - Wireframes</image:title>
      <image:caption>When creating the wireframes, clarity was my main goal, similar to the info arch. For starters, I completely cut the idea of a user account. I felt people being forced to create an account after downloading this app will only increase anxiety and serve no real purpose in the grand scheme of the app. I also wanted information about the anxiety disorders themselves to be easily accessible, so that anybody can quickly find and learn about them.</image:caption>
    </image:image>

      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6079d53091c1aa468fec326b/1619636594813-ZO2MJDSEA0Z9S349KNLG/mindshift-mockup-1.png</image:loc>
      <image:title>Portfolio - MindShift Redesign - Mock Ups</image:title>
      <image:caption>With everything else put into place, I began putting in the details such as color and type. For color, I wanted lighter, calmer colors. This helps give the app a calming feeling in general. I also made sure the type was very light, not being too overbearing for the users. For the mockups themselves, I made three separate ones, choosing select screens to sample the different styles with. A dark mode option was also made for each screen. Overall, the first mockup ended up being the main basis, though for screens such as “Learn”, I used different mockups since I felt they were more effective.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Portfolio - Destination Doylestown - Information Architecture Redesign</image:title>
      <image:caption>To begin the process, I first wanted to recreate the information architecture for the original site. Similar to many government sites, the information architecture is often all over the place, having confusing navigation titles such as “More like this” and repeating the same information over and over. Due to that, I felt I needed a cleaner information architecture to work with before I could decide what would be in the phone app. I first started by mapping out the original info arch to about three levels deep, then took that architecture and remapped it to what I felt was best.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6079d53091c1aa468fec326b/1619798493183-AJG1S813I91SU3VXY09S/info-arch-mobile.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Portfolio - Destination Doylestown - Mobile Information Architecture</image:title>
      <image:caption>With a redesigned architecture in place, I could now determine what would make it into the phone app, as well as what would be the focus. As it’s a phone app, the scale must be smaller than the full desktop app. Due to that, I decided to cut most of the government section, as it’s simply info dumps and wouldn’t be very useful for a user on the go. I also decided to expand the services screen, taking tabs from all over the website and organizing them between resident services and business services. Finally, the community section stayed mostly the same, with me just picking what I felt would be most useful for a user on the go.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6079d53091c1aa468fec326b/1619798567191-ZY1UTFHLOIID4QN67UN8/user-flow-grace-image.png</image:loc>
      <image:title>Portfolio - Destination Doylestown - User Flows</image:title>
      <image:caption>With a structure in place, I needed to see how the app itself flowed. To do that, I created three separate user flow scenarios, each focusing on a different aspect of the app. This included more railroaded features with little choice, such as selecting a map to download, versus the more open choices like finding a community feature to get involved with. Even with the more open ended choices, the overall flow of the app remained fairly simply throughout, only taking a few taps to get through most features.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6079d53091c1aa468fec326b/1619798705499-89DBOZV31LOWXJDF852U/paper-prototype-sample.png</image:loc>
      <image:title>Portfolio - Destination Doylestown - Paper Prototype</image:title>
      <image:caption>With everything in place, I began making my initial prototype. While I typically use a program like InVision to create the prototype, that’s often quite time consuming. With how many unique screens there are throughout the app, I instead decided to make a paper prototype. By drawing out the screens by hand, I was able to rapidly develop multiple screens, as well as be more efficient at simply getting my ideas out on the table.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>

      <image:title>Portfolio - Destination Doylestown - User Testing</image:title>
      <image:caption>With a prototype now ready, I could begin testing other users to see how they flowed through the app. These tests were designed like an interview, with a full script and specified tasks for the user to go through. From these tests, one of the main issues that occurred was the navigation. Multiple users were confused, both unsure of what the icons meant, as well as what features would be under what tab. Along with that, some users felt there was a lack of clear information in some screens, such as the ticket payment options.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Portfolio - United Ecosystems Alliance - Site Research and Personas</image:title>
      <image:caption>To begin the process, we began researching other environmental non-profits. This included seeing how they styled their logos, as well as what features the site contains such as content and hierarchy structure. Along with this research, four different persona’s were created by my partners to better understand what our site’s audience may be. Research showed environmental concerns are often more prominent among the younger generations, with the persona’s showing as much. These included a current college student, a full time copy-writer and even a high school senior. Through this research, we were able to gain a better understanding of what the focus of the site should be.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6079d53091c1aa468fec326b/1619809004294-3MQRT04U7LSOP7SOW37O/uea-info-arch.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Portfolio - United Ecosystems Alliance - Information Architecture</image:title>
      <image:caption>With research to go off of, I then began making the site’s information architecture. As a group, we determined the site’s main focus should be information, as we found it surprisingly difficult to find lots of environmental information, such as biodiversity and deforestation. With that in mind, I decided on the main pages being “How to Help” and “News”, as I felt that was the most consistent way to present the user with new information. Along with those main tabs, I also choose to have multiple sections in tabs such as news, so that a user could find the specific info they were looking for, whether it be political news or endangered species updates.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6079d53091c1aa468fec326b/1619809084120-ZXFHA7O0PD3VEUJ9OZEW/Screen+Shot+2021-04-30+at+2.57.53+PM.png</image:loc>
      <image:title>Portfolio - United Ecosystems Alliance - Wireframes</image:title>
      <image:caption>With the structure in place, I then constructed wire frames for the main navigation pages. In these wireframes, I wanted to make the visuals of the site large and apparent, as actually seeing what happens to the environment is a good way to get a user to understand the danger of climate change. I also wanted to make sure the pages were a reasonable size, not forcing the user to endlessly scroll through information they may or may not care about.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6079d53091c1aa468fec326b/1619809186072-9BVDAL728I3T3P4FEJ9H/uea-mockups_Page_1.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Portfolio - United Ecosystems Alliance - Mockups</image:title>
      <image:caption>With a wireframe done, mockups were then created. As a group we decided to each make a separate mockup, so we could have multiple choices for a final design. For my own mockups, I based them off my wireframes, adding in the necessary features like images and color. In the end, we ended up mixing and matching our mockups. My “News” and “Donate” mockup were the final ones for those designs, while with “Home” and “Help” we used another group members mockups</image:caption>

      <image:title>Portfolio - United Ecosystems Alliance - Poster and Cards</image:title>
      <image:caption>Along with the website itself, we also had to expand the brand of our non-profit with items like posters and mailing cards. For both, we worked together to help make a few different mockups for each. Along with the flat image, we also put the posters on top of stock images to see how the image itself may look on a real life poster</image:caption>

      <image:title>Portfolio - United Ecosystems Alliance - Site Coding</image:title>
      <image:caption>With the rest of the process done, I began fully coding the site. To help code it, I used the program SublimeText. As this was my first real time coding, it was a fairly time consuming process. To make sure the site was responsive, I made multiple media queries for the many potential screen sizes the site might see. I also tried to make certain features stand out more, such as making each section on the news screen jump forward when hovered upon. While I was the site’s main coder, due to limited time I had to ask one of my group members for assistance in coding certain pages of the site. Mainly, the individual sections for Politics, Animals and Science were all created by them, allowing me to easily copy over the code and add in extra features such as the tabs jumping forward.</image:caption>
